• A new year, a new attempt at microblogging?

  • Spent today catching up on work (more remains to do there, which is why you haven’t heard from me lately), and now I’m baking cookies with the younger kid. Well, we mixed the dough together, at least. I’m in charge of keeping track of them in the oven.

  • Cleaning out the basement in anticipation of carpet and paint work. The basement includes my home office, with a lot more than when I moved my office home five years ago.

  • The new year has begun with hours of house cleaning. We’re clearing out most of the basement in anticipation of re-carpeting and painting it. Also, for the first time in many years, the workbench in the garage is clear enough that one could consider working on something there.

  • This sign is inaccurate.

  • Though I find short winter days tiresome, I love the chance to take a few minutes late in the afternoon to watch the light fade over the mountains to the west and settle in for what I expect will be a quiet evening.

  • The kitchen faucet is repaired, and the bathroom faucet has been replaced. Next up: Leaking dishwasher sump. Parts arriving tomorrow.

  • We put our tree up a little earlier than usual this year.

  • Because it is 2020, and we are only eating at home, and not having anyone come to the house, of course the dishwasher has a leak.

(The good news: It’s a slow enough leak that it didn’t destroy the floor, and it appears to be in a component at the bottom of the machine that can probably be replaced.)

  • I don’t love the darkness of impending winter, but I do like the way the afternoon light falls.

  • Sun behind clouds low in the western sky

    Looking west late this afternoon.

It’s been a difficult year, but my family and I have a lot to be grateful for.

  • At this time last year, we were finishing a visit to Monterey and Pacific Grove, California. No travel for us this year—but under the circumstances, we’re okay with that.

  • Snowy morning gives way to beautiful blue skies.

  • The other day, I was remembering the mid-2000s, when I enjoyed reading blogs–even had one, for a while–and getting news through a RSS reader instead of someone’s algorithm or even browsing site front pages. Then I remembered: that stuff’s all still out there. Glad I remembered.

  • Sure, I’ll give this thing a try.
